Falling for North London

A journey to homeownership in North London

When I first moved to London, I wasn’t sure I’d arrive where I am now. I was young and full of hope. Sometimes confident, always insecure and not quite ready to settle down. There was a little more lesson-learning and character-building I had to do first. More living, you might say.

Even though London was where I wanted to be, I knew nothing about living in this city, a city so different from the one I grew up in. The differences were a cultural shock at first: queuing for public transport isn’t a thing, elevator etiquette is a thing, and after-work drinks on Thursday? Well, that’s a weekly ritual.

Slowly and then all at once, I found my way. And not just in the ‘I know how to navigate the tube’ sense, but where I found myself feeling most like me. I’d made the move to Enfield, North London. I fell for the suburban charm. The leafy streets and peaceful parks reminded me of where I’d come from. Even though I was still living in a house share, it felt familiar from the first moment, and that’s how I knew it was the place I belonged.

Sharing a home with strangers can be fun, but it also has its challenges. The lack of personal space, taking turns to use the washing machine and finding questionable food in the fridge become frustrating. There just didn’t seem to be an alternative option. At least, not one I could afford.

Then a friend told me about Shared Ownership.

What once seemed completely out of reach – owning a home in North London – suddenly became possible. I crunched the numbers, and it revealed the truth: I could buy a home here.

So, I researched my options and found Newlon Living. Viewings filled me with equal parts nerves and excitement. I pictured furniture in empty rooms. Imagined a future based on what might happen if I said ‘yes’.

And that’s what I did.

Is Shared Ownership worth it? Yes, it’s given me a place to live that’s truly my own. One that provides stability and lets me invest in my future – a future where North London will always be my home.
